    Critical exponents of a three dimensional O(4) spin model

    By Monte Carlo simulation we study the critical exponents governing the transition of the three-dimensional classical O(4) Heisenberg model, which is considered to be in the same universality class as the finite-temperature QCD with massless two flavors. We use the single cluster algorithm and the histogram reweighting technique to obtain observables at the critical temperature. After estimating an accurate value of the inverse critical temperature \Kc=0.9360(1), we make non-perturbative estimates for various critical exponents by finite-size scaling analysis. They are in excellent agreement with those obtained with the 4ϵ4-\epsilon expansion method with errors reduced to about halves of them.Comment: 25 pages with 8 PS figures, LaTeX, UTHEP-28

    Allozymic variation in nine protein producing loci was examined in three species of Pardosa using starch gel electrophoresis. Allozyme frequencies showed a high degree of geographic uniformity among conspecific populations. Estimated heterozygosities for the three species ranged from 0.05 to 0.15.     Comments on Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics for simulations of Potts models in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation

    We compare the correlation times of the Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics for two-dimensional Ising and three-state Potts models, and the three-dimensional Ising model for the simulations in the percolation prepresentation. The results are also compared with Swendsen-Wang and Wolff cluster dynamics. It is found that Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics have essentially the same dynamical critical behavior. Contrary to Gliozzi's claim (cond-mat/0201285), the Gliozzi dynamics has critical slowing down comparable to that of other cluster methods. For the two-dimensional Ising model, both Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics give good fits to logarithmic size dependences; for two-dimensional three-state Potts model, their dynamical critical exponent z is 0.49(1); the three-dimensional Ising model has z = 0.37(2).Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 5 figure

    Collinear N\'eel-type ordering in partially frustrated lattices

    We consider two partially frustrated S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin systems on the triangular and pentagonal lattices. In an elementary plaquette of the two lattices, one bond has exchange interaction strength α\alpha (α1\alpha \leq 1) whereas all other bonds have exchange interaction strength unity. We show that for α\alpha less than a critical value αc\alpha_{c}, collinear N\'eel-type ordering is possible in the ground state.     The Carrington event not observed in most ice core nitrate records

    The Carrington Event of 1859 is considered to be among the largest space weather events of the last 150 years. We show that only one out of 14 well-resolved ice core records from Greenland and Antarctica has a nitrate spike dated to 1859. No sharp spikes are observed in the Antarctic cores studied here. In Greenland numerous spikes are observed in the 40 years surrounding 1859, but where other chemistry was measured, all large spikes have the unequivocal signal, including co-located spikes in ammonium, formate, black carbon and vanillic acid, of biomass burning plumes. It seems certain that most spikes in an earlier core, including that claimed for 1859, are also due to biomass burning plumes, and not to solar energetic particle (SEP) events. We conclude that an event as large as the Carrington Event did not leave an observable, widespread imprint in nitrate in polar ice. Nitrate spikes cannot be used to derive the statistics of SEPs

    Ising spins coupled to a four-dimensional discrete Regge skeleton

    Regge calculus is a powerful method to approximate a continuous manifold by a simplicial lattice, keeping the connectivities of the underlying lattice fixed and taking the edge lengths as degrees of freedom. The discrete Regge model employed in this work limits the choice of the link lengths to a finite number. To get more precise insight into the behavior of the four-dimensional discrete Regge model, we coupled spins to the fluctuating manifolds. We examined the phase transition of the spin system and the associated critical exponents. The results are obtained from finite-size scaling analyses of Monte Carlo simulations. We find consistency with the mean-field theory of the Ising model on a static four-dimensional lattice.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure

    Three-dimensional Ising model in the fixed-magnetization ensemble: a Monte Carlo study

    We study the three-dimensional Ising model at the critical point in the fixed-magnetization ensemble, by means of the recently developed geometric cluster Monte Carlo algorithm. We define a magnetic-field-like quantity in terms of microscopic spin-up and spin-down probabilities in a given configuration of neighbors. In the thermodynamic limit, the relation between this field and the magnetization reduces to the canonical relation M(h). However, for finite systems, the relation is different. We establish a close connection between this relation and the probability distribution of the magnetization of a finite-size system in the canonical ensemble.Comment: 8 pages, 2 Postscript figures, uses RevTe
